Electrique Music Discography (Part 1 of 3): The UP Era

Mixtape #1: ELEVEN

Release date: October 11, 2005

Summary: This was originally intended for student #11 in one of my very first lab classes. I only made two physical copies of it, but he inevitably did not show up on the event where I was supposed to give it to him. I don't think I need to elaborate what happened between us and somehow, I find myself not wanting to. I'll just let the album cover and the songs speak for themselves. There are a few mediocre (and maybe cringeworthy) songs in here, but mostly I was able to express the sentiment well enough for one to feel that it is a heartfelt album.

Mixtape #2: BACK FOR MORE

Release date: First Semester AY 2005-2006/ November 2005

Summary: This album was especially made for one of my lab classes from my first semester of teaching so I guess you can say that this is legit, my first real student album. Who I am as a teacher today was shaped by that class. I just fell in love with them and they made me realize that teaching was my calling. The first half of the album deals with the emotional tangles I had involved myself in during the time (including student #11) while the second half focuses on my friendship with this group of students. Musically, this album is all over the place (I can never fathom what possessed me to include Luxurious in here) but it is well-meaning (I Will Remember You will always be the perfect student song) and has a number of touching moments.

  19. Alanis Morissette - You Learn

Mixtape #3: TIME OF MY LIFE

Release date: Second Semester AY 2005-2006/ March 2006

Summary: With the warm reception I got for Back for More, I decided to continue making mixtapes for the rest of my students from here on. Boasting a better set of songs, Time of My Life is slightly better than Back for More but it is still highly disjointed. The bizarre love triangle I had myself involved in was coming to a head at this point and I was slowly being forced into making a decision - hence, the title (it is also a line from Don't Go Away.) If I were to pick an album which describes how it is to be confused and excited about love in your early 20s, this would be it.

  3. Gwen Stefani - The Real Thing (Wendy and Lisa Flow Jam Mix)

  11. Tori Amos - A Sorta Fairytale
  12. Alanis Morissette - Simple Together
  13. Marion Raven - Little By Little
  14. Lifehouse - Chapter One
  15. Sheryl Crow - The First Cut is the Deepest
  16. Oasis - Don't Go Away
  17. The Cranberries - I'm Still Remembering
  18. Eraserheads - Minsan
  19. Kamikazee - Narda
  20. The Beatles - In My Life

Mixtape #4: LOVELY

Release date: Summer AY 2005-2006/ May 2006

Summary: Lovely is my first "greatest hits" album, covering the best songs from the three previous mixtapes I made. The summer semester only lasts for two months - not enough time for me to make a completely new album from scratch so making a greatest hits album sounded more logical. This is the first album which gave me a real sense that I can make something really wonderful out of these disparate songs. It turned out really well and was even more cohesive than the first three albums. Thematically, Lovely is about holding on to a love that seems all but destined to crash. I may all be about hipstery and indie songs now but I still can't deny that there is something eerily beautiful about this album.

  1. The Cranberries - Daffodil Lament
  2. Switchfoot - You
  3. Kelly Clarkson - Beautiful Disaster
  4. Madonna - I Deserve It
  5. Lifehouse - Blind

  10. Ryan Cabrera - Always Come Back To You
  11. Imago - Akap
  12. Oasis - Don't Go Away
  13. The Beatles - In My Life
  14. Westlife - Can't Lose What You Never Had
  15. No Doubt - Running
  16. Coldplay - X & Y
  17. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends
  18. After Image - Tag-Ulan

Mixtape #5: BREAK

Release date: First Semester AY 2006-2007/ September 2006

Summary: The relationship I had been holding on to from the last album finally came to an end, and Break chronicles the outcome of that decision. This was also made during the time when I first came out to my friends (through my blog) and this is reflected by the secrets-being-revealed theme going on in the first three songs. It is about me breaking away to get to know my true self. The cover also references the theme about secrets. Break is decidedly schizophrenic, alternating energetic and sometimes even angry songs, with slow to midtempo tracks with wistful and dreamy arrangements. As with all breakups, your elation at being free is countered by a good measure of regret.

  1. Kylie Minogue - Confide in Me
  2. Marion Raven - End of Me
  3. Linkin Park - Somewhere I Belong
  4. 3 Doors Down - Let Me Go
  5. The Cranberries - Linger

Mixtape #7: LIGHT

Release date: Second Semester AY 2006-2007/ March 2007

Summary: After the misery of all my previous albums, I have finally found the Light at the end of the tunnel in the form of my first boyfriend. Yes, may ganon! Light celebrates my newly found happiness and stability, and I was finally on my way to fully accepting and loving myself for who I am. This is the most Disney-ish and most carefree of all my albums so if that is your thing, this one is for you. It's really safe and lacks excitement though.

  1. Rascal Flatts - I'm Moving On
  2. Nelly Furtado feat. Attitude - Afraid

Mixtape #8: FORCA

Release date: Summer AY 2006-2007/ May 2007

Summary: My second greatest hits album fell considerably flat compared to Lovely, and this frustrates me because my students that summer are arguably the best batch I have ever had the honor of being with. Forca ups the happiness tempo I have started with Light, but somehow, the songs did not gel together as well as they should have. This album remains to be a low point in my discography but that is in no way a reflection of the happiness I was basking in at that time.

Mixtape #9: REASON

Release date: First Semester AY 2007-2008/ September 2007

Summary: It had been three years since the incident but I was still plagued by memories of student #11 and I had finally decided to confront his memory once and for all. Reason deals with letting go of someone you love and you should know how that can be one of the toughest things we have to go through in our lives. I was slowly coming to terms with the fact that he will never feel the same about me (not proud that it took me this long.) My resolve allowed me to reach new creative highs with this album. It was markedly more mature, both in content and in sound, and is leagues above my previous efforts. I was very inspired and I'm just thankful I was able to capture all of those emotions into making this wonderfully haunting album. A definite high point in my discography.

Mixtape #10: THE ICE

Release date: Second Semester AY 2007-2008/ March 2008

Summary: At this point, I have gotten rather tired of the usual cycle of drama and pathos in my albums and I decided to switch it up by making an unabashedly dance pop album. As the title suggests, I was mostly aiming for a chill album - something you can just play in the background while you sit back and luxuriate. I had been rather harsh on The Ice over the years because of its lack of a solid narrative but after listening to it now, I think that it aged quite well and I can still see myself playing the whole thing. Also, this is the first album I had a launch party for so that's another yasss!

Mixtape #11: RAINBOW'S END

Release date: Summer AY 2007-2008/ May 2008

Summary: Oh my gosh, this album. This period is possibly the most tumultuous time of my romantic life. My current relationship then was on the rocks and someone new came along, and though I knew it will end up in failure, I still decided to go for it and try. Rainbow's End is all about believing in your dreams and fearlessly following them, no matter what the outcome will be. We all have to go through that phase in our lives until we finally learn and know better. If you were to condense hopeless romanticism in an album, this would be it. It still has a way of clenching my heart from the sheer amount of memories stored in it, but Rainbow's End will always be very special to me.

  19. Phil Collins - You'll Be In My Heart

Mixtape #12: GUN

Release date: First Semester AY 2008-2009/ October 2008

Summary: After the escapism of the previous album, reality kicked in and found me among the desolation of my previous relationship. This chronicles me struggling to get back on my feet and focus on the relationship in front of me. Gun is my first pure rock album, and it also has emo undertones, which at the time, was slowly gaining popularity as a movement. So this was me trying to capture the zeitgeist of that era. It's a good enough album, mostly dark and brooding, perfect for when you want to sulk. It's called Gun because when you love someone, it's as if you are letting that person point a gun to your head. Also, the cover looks kinda cool doesn't it?

  2. Audioslave - Be Yourself

  20. Goo Goo Dolls - Big Machine

Mixtape #14: PLATINUM SOUL

Date released: Second Semester AY 2008-2009/ March 2009

Summary: Attitude. Fashion. Pleasure. Megalomania! These are the keystones of Platinum Soul. A fusion of glam rock and electronica, this album is perfect for either stomping on the runway or just preening in front of your crush along AS walk. I allowed myself to experiment with more genres with this one, and though lacking in narrative, it sure sounds interesting and exciting. It's all in good fun so no need to get dem panties in a bunch.

Mixtape #15: DUSK AT RED ISLAND

Release date: Summer AY 2008-2009/ May 2009

Summary: This is my first 4-year greatest hits collection covering every album since Eleven. It turned out alright, with many of the new songs I added alluding to the island analogy I was going for with the title, which was incidentally also the name of my then highly active blog.

Mixtape #16: HEART LIKE A WHEEL

Date released: First Semester AY 2009-2010/ October 2009

Summary: I was in between two relationships during this time (one ending, and another just begun) and this is reflected by the two halves of this album. The title also references the cycle of falling in and out of love, not always with the same person. I was going for a more classic sound here, so many of the songs feature piano or a light acoustic guitar accompaniment. Heart Like A Wheel turned out very well and remains one of my favorites. Even today, I still find myself spending the occasional sleepless night listening to Catalyst or Along the Wall.

  15. Brooke Fraser - Deciphering Me

  17. Carrie Underwood - Wheel of the World
  18. Sara Bareilles - Bittersweet

Mixtape #17: RUNAWAY

Date released: Second Semester AY 2009-2010/ March 2010

Summary: Runaway is possibly the loudest album I've ever made. It's filled to the brim with punk-laced guitar riffs and indelible pop hooks with enough left over to make another album. I just wanted to leave all my woes behind and be reckless and over-the-top crazy with this album and I guess that's why this has turned out to be one of the more enduring mixtapes I've ever had the honor to be a part of. Students everywhere always seem to ask about this album. Never fails to make me pump my fist in the air. An unmistakable anthem for our youth.

Mixtape #18: ROBOTBOY

Release date: Summer AY 2009-2010/ May 2010

Summary: With Robotboy, I wanted to try this new idea of juxtaposing sad lyrics with upbeat pop tunes. A Dancing With Tears In My Eyes kinda vibe. The results were unfortunately mixed. It's enjoyable enough but I wish I could have used more Goldfrapp and La Roux so it would have been more avant-garde. There are some amazing gems of songs hidden in here though and I still enjoy the whole journey nonetheless. In fact, I found myself unconsciously bopping to it, just a few hours ago.

  1. Goldfrapp - Rocket
  2. Holly Valance - Naughty Girl
  3. Steps - Happy Go Lucky
  4. Alphabeat - Heart Failure
  5. La Roux - Bulletproof

Mixtape #19: DEMONS

Release date: First Semester AY 2010-2011/ July 2010

Summary: Demons is a retro-influenced collection of the best songs from the four previous albums. If you are curious and want a sampler of those albums, I highly recommend this one. There is a significant amount of growth in this album, as showcased by those amazing trio of ending songs. No More 'I Love You's' can be one of the campiest songs ever - something that might make you think twice when playing it loudly - but I can't deny that it still sweeps me away everytime I hear it.

  1. The Bird and the Bee - Heard It On the Radio (Demons Edit)
  2. Lenka - Trouble Is A Friend

  13. Adam Lambert - Whataya Want From Me
  14. Fall Out Boy - (Coffee's for Closers)
  15. Kelly Clarkson - Already Gone
  16. Sara Bareilles - Gravity
  17. Annie Lennox - No More 'I Love You's'
  18. Melanie C - First Day of My Life

Mixtape #20: 808

Release date: First Semester AY 2010-2011/ October 2010

Summary: I was at peak party mode during this time and so I have finally decided to make an all out party album. Unlike The Ice which doesn't try too hard to get noticed, 808 shamelessly targets the dancefloor with abandon and includes some of the most iconic pop-dance songs I've ever known such as XXXO, Get Outta My Way, and Last Friday Night (it was here before it got released, mind you.) This was my last unmistakably pop album, and I made sure that I'd be leaving the genre behind with as much fanfare as possible. Consider it a tribute of sorts to pop music, if you will.

  1. Enrique Iglesias - Ring My Bells
  2. Kat Deluna - Feel What I Feel
  3. Jessica Folker - Crash Like A Wrecking Ball
  4. M.I.A. - XXXO
  5. Ke$ha - Take It Off
  6. Utada Hikaru - Dirty Desire
  7. Robyn - Criminal Intent
  8. Britney Spears - Early Mornin'
  9. Sugababes - Supernatural
  10. Christina Aguilera - Monday Morning
  11. Pet Shop Boys - Minimal
  12. Lady Gaga - No Way
  13. Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way
  14. Adam Lambert - Pick U Up
  15. Pink - Raise Your Glass
  16. Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
  17. The-Dream - Florida University
  18. Taio Cruz - I Can Be

Mixtape #21: A CROWD OF OTHERS - PART 1

Date released: Second Semester AY 2010-2011/ December 2010

Summary: This marks my first attempt at making a full indie album. I was going through a philosophical revolution at the time and I guess it naturally filtered down to the music I was listening to. I was at peak popularity during the 808 era, but somehow, it dawned upon me that no matter how many friends I have surrounding me, I am essentially still alone. The A Crowd of Others trilogy focuses on different forms of alienation. Part 1 deals with the feeling of being trapped in your own mind. That should help explain the cover.

  1. Sleigh Bells - Tell 'Em
  2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero Zero
  3. Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch
  4. Liars - Plaster Casts of Everything
  5. These New Puritans - Elvis
  6. MGMT - Flash Delirium
  7. Klaxons - Echoes
  8. The National - Mistaken for Strangers
  9. Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
  10. Surfer Blood - Swim
  11. Kasabian - Butcher Blues
  12. The Faint - Mirror Error
  13. Foals - Electric Bloom

Mixtape #22:  A CROWD OF OTHERS - PART 2

Date released: Second Semester AY 2010-2011/ February 7, 2011

Summary: Whereas Part 1 sounds shattered and abrasive, Part 2 is warm and misleadingly inviting. At this point, I was beginning to be disillusioned when it comes to love and this is reflected in a number of the songs here. Part 2 deals with questioning the ultimate purpose of romantic relationships. There are a number of good cuts in here including my faves Subliminal Message, Down By the Water, and I Don't Believe in Love.

  1. Kate Nash - I Just Love You More
  2. Tegan & Sara - You Wouldn't Like Me
  3. The Futureheads - Skip To The End
  4. Harlem - Be My Baby
  5. Best Coast - Our Deal
  6. Happy Birthday - Subliminal Message
  7. The Drums - Down By the Water
  8. Field Music - In Context
  9. Phoenix - Lasso
  10. TV on the Radio - Dreams
  11. The School - I Don't Believe In Love
  12. The Weepies - They're In Love, Where Am I?
  13. Noah & the Whale - 5 Years Time

Mixtape #23:  A CROWD OF OTHERS - PART 3

Date released: Second Semester AY 2010-2011/ March 14, 2011

Summary: Okay, I admit that I don't fully understand this album myself. While I was making this, I was just guided by my feelings of uncertainty and dread because this was my last sem teaching in UP. There is something otherworldly about it, and if I were to describe its colors from start to finish, it goes from black to white to colorless. I originally intended Part 3 to be about the spirit, so i guess that accounts for the inverted and ghostly feel to it (referenced in that weird cover.) Despite its deliberate occasional vagueness and lack of strong hooks, Part 3 is my favorite of the trilogy. There is just something compelling about it.

  1. Silversun Pickups - Growing Old Is Getting Old
  2. The Big Pink - Velvet
  3. Crystal Castles feat. Robert Smith - Not In Love

Mixtape #24: WHEN TO SURRENDER

Date released: June 11, 2011

Summary: And now we reach my farewell album for UP. How many times have I cried while listening to this? Going through these albums consecutively was like reliving all those years and I can't help but feel a bit glum about the whole thing ending like this. There is nothing really special about this album musically (it's just plain old rock music), but that was never my priority in the first place because When to Surrender is all about the message. I don't think I could have made my farewell message any clearer than through the 15 tracks I chose for it. It shows that until the end, I stand by my work - through my students, my albums, and my causes - and I am proud of the little that I have accomplished during my stay within UP. Give it a spin. It won't be a complete waste of your time.
